Do you feel like giving yourself a treat and at the same time assist Redkite, one of Australia’s leading cancer support charities for children?

If the answer is Yes – have we got something special for you!!

How would you like to enjoy the best seats in the house as you experience the thrill of racing at Caulfield Racecourse with two race day tickets and lunch at the Winning Post Restaurant? Your day will be completed with accommodation in a Southbank Review Room at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Melbourne including full buffet breakfast for two. Racing package is available on a non-feature race day for the 2009/2010 racing season whilst the accommodation is valid until 30 June 2010.

This “prize” was originally a Silent Auction item at the 2009 Racing’s Night of Champions but unfortunately the successful bidder has proven unreachable.

Redkite will be accepting “bids” for the prize via Diana Houdijker by email DHoudijker@redkite.org.au or telephone 9219 4012 until 5.00 pm on Friday, 16 October 2009. The highest bidder at that time will be the prize winner.

Your support of Redkite is very much appreciated.

On 1st September 2009, the Sydney Turf Club appointed Mr Max Whitby as a Director on its Board to fill the casual vacancy which had arisen following the resignation of Alan Brown. Max has subsequently been re-elected to the position at the STC Annual General Meeting on 28 September 2009.

Commenting on the appointment, STC Chairman Mr Bill Picken said “We are delighted to have been able to appoint someone of the calibre of Max Whitby to the STC Board. Max is a man of enormous standing within the NSW racing industry and has a great history of service in administration within the industry. He will bring his knowledge of racing and its participants to the STC Board as well as providing the strength of his financial and business acumen to an already strong Board”.

With nominations for BOBS now closed the outstanding feature has been the enthusiastic way in which owners and trainers have embraced the concept of BOBS Extra.

Of our current 2-year-olds, 2591 have been nominated for BOBS, and 839 (one in every three) has been nominated for BOBS Extra as well. That is a wonderful response, given the combined cost of $1500 in tough economic times.

It is also a very positive sign that there is a demand for more middle distance and staying races, BOBS Extra was designed to strengthen the standard of these races in NSW and over the next few seasons, as BOBS Extra kicks in, I am certain we will see more distance races being programmed, and bigger and more competitive fields.

Of the current BOBS nominated 3-year-olds, almost 400 were entered for BOBS Extra – again, a strong response considering the fee was set at $2500. I know some owners felt that was too high but to make BOBS Extra viable, we couldn’t make it any lower.

Remember, BOBS Extra applies to your horse from the day it turns 4YO to the day it is retired – even if it’s still racing, like Mustard, at the age of 12! So there will be many opportunities for owners to pick up those BOBS Extra bonuses. The only restrictions for BOBS Extra, of course, are that the races must be 1600m or longer, and Listed and Group events are excluded.

During September there were 55 BOBS bonuses won, compared with 36 in September a year ago. So every month Racing NSW is putting an increasing amount of money back into owners’ pockets, helping to make ownership more affordable, and at the same time, giving strong support to the NSW breeding industry.

For further information please contact:
John Gatfield,
BOBS Executive Officer,
Racing NSW,

Members are reminded that Matthew Talbot Homeless Services are conducting a Race Day Luncheon at Royal Randwick Racecourse on 17 October 2009, the third day of the AJC’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

This exciting day out is perfectly timed and priced to suit an early office Christmas party; entertain business partners or enjoy time with friends and family, all in the comfort of an air-conditioned marquee with uninterrupted views of the winning post!

This year’s Race Day will raise funds to support a new Matthew Talbot Homeless Service; Vincentian House. Opening later this year in Surry Hills, Vincentian House will accommodate single parents, two-parent families and single women.

Vincentian House is not just about somewhere safe to sleep, but about building sustainable lifestyles. By joining us for a great day trackside, you will give hope to so many families that have hit on hard times. Your presence will show them that tomorrow can be different.
