FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

As I have mentioned to you before, the Association continues to work tirelessly to advance the interests of our members.

One of the avenues we use to do this is via our participation on various committees. This month I thought I would tell you about one of those committees - the Racing Industry Consultation Group (RICG) for which I am the Association’s representative.

RICG is a statutory body established by the Thoroughbred Racing Amendment Bill 2008 under the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Act 1996. RICG has the function of consulting with and making recommendations to Racing NSW (the regulatory body for thoroughbred racing in NSW) on matters concerning thoroughbred racing in NSW.

RICG is made up of a representative from each of the following industry participants – Australian Turf Club, provincial race clubs in NSW, country race clubs in NSW, thoroughbred racehorse owners in NSW, thoroughbred racehorse trainers in NSW, NSW jockeys, thoroughbred breeders in NSW and NSW unions. As such, RICG is the representative body for the NSW thoroughbred racing industry.

From my viewpoint, RICG is a great concept. It provides an opportunity for participants from all facets of the industry to work together for the good of the industry. Whilst committee members do not always have the same view on certain issues, I can assure you that each matter dealt with receives plenty of discussion and in some cases, very healthy debate.

With a broad scope of issues constantly arising, RICG has been able to provide Racing NSW with invaluable input into the many matters that have come across the Committee Room table.

HENDRA VIRUS – IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE HORSE INDUSTRY

All sectors of the horse industry must understand the risks posed by Hendra virus.

Hendra virus is carried by fruit bats, and may cause fever, respiratory illness or nervous illness when it infects horses.

Minimise the risk to yourself and your horse by:

  • preventing horses from eating or drinking feed or water that may be contaminated by body fluids from fruit bats roosting, feeding or flying overhead and
  • knowing the signs of Hendra and what to do if you suspect infection.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries has released a Safety Alert which provides links to information on Hendra virus that will assist you to understand the disease and how to minimise the risk of infection. Click here to read.

NSWROA TO SPONSOR RACE DURING COFFS HARBOUR CUP CARNIVAL

I am very pleased to advise that the Association will again be sponsoring the NSW Racehorse Owners Association Maiden Handicap over 1012 metres at beautiful Coffs Harbour on Sunday 24 July 2011 as part of the Association’s continued commitment to support our country colleagues.

Sunday 24th July is NBN Community Cups Day and is the first day of the 2011 Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Cup Carnival. Held over a three day period the Carnival continues on Wednesday 3rd August with the Sportsmans Race Day and concludes on Thursday 4th August with the 2011 Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Day.

The feature event on the program on Thursday 4th August is, of course, the Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Gold Cup with $70,000 in prizemoney on offer. A number of social events will also be conducted on the day with one of the highlights being the Park Beach Plaza Fashions on the Field which is always hotly contested.

We encourage all members in the vicinity to join us and the Coffs Harbour Racing Club on 24 July for a great day out.

For further details on the Carnival, visit the Coffs Harbour Racing Club website at www.coffsracingclub.com.au.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN RACING – SYDNEY NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY

Young Professionals in Racing are currently seeking expressions of interest from young professionals (aged approximately 21-35) who are working, or have an interest in thoroughbred racing, to participate in a Sydney based networking group.

The group intends to provide several informal social events throughout the year, creating opportunities to socialise and build linkages, enable mentoring, education and support, while raising the profile of racing as a vibrant industry through business connections.

An exciting launch event is planned for September, prior to Sydney’s Spring Carnival, which we invite you to attend!

If you are interested in obtaining more information, please contact ypr.sydney@gmail.com or call Kathryn Thomson on 0402 062 358 or 02 8267 9927.

BOBS & BOBS EXTRA UPDATE

It’s that time of year again when owners should be filling out the BOBS and BOBS Extra nomination form.

The closing date is 1 September but don’t wait until then because that’s when the fax machine goes into meltdown, that’s when bulk mail takes ages to clear, and all too often that’s when mistakes are made and nominations are overlooked.

Happily I can report that by mid-July nominations received for BOBS 2011 were running well ahead of the numbers received at the same time last year.

Remember it costs $660 to enter BOBS, an additional $840 for BOBS Extra, but both have to be done at the same time – there is no late nomination possible for BOBS Extra.

Speaking of late nominations, we are looking closely at the economics of allowing late nominations for BOBS. Until now a late nomination has been allowed at any time while a horse is 2YO or 3YO, for a fee of $5500. All too often the horses nominated late are horses which have shown already in training they are ready to win, reducing the uncertainty and the odds of winning a BOBS bonus compared with those nominated on time by 1 September.

We may have to look at restricting late nominations to 2YOs, which would still allow BOBS entries for horses which are purchased at the “Ready-to-Run” sales late in the year and those which have been genuinely late in finding owners or trainers.

So there’s another reason to make sure your rising 2YO is nominated for BOBS this month! Click here for a nomination form.

Now some welcome news about BOBS.

For historical or administrative reasons going back several years, BOBS bonuses have not been available at meetings held by the Canberra Racing Club. That should change in the new racing season.

The Canberra Racing Club has suggested it could fund its own bonus scheme, linked to BOBS. The same level of bonus would be available - $5000 per race – and would be paid directly by the club, rather than through Racing NSW.

To be eligible a 2YO or 3YO horse would have to be nominated for the Racing NSW BOBS scheme. BOBS Extra and BOBS Double-Up would not apply to Canberra races.

This agreement could be in effect from 1 September 2011 and would give owners resident in both NSW and the ACT a significant boost to potential prize money. It would also strengthen racing in Canberra, making races there more attractive and more competitive.

That should be a win-win result both for owners and for the go-ahead Canberra Racing Club.

For further information please contact John Gatfield, BOBS Executive Officer, Racing NSW on telephone: (02) 9551-7574.
