FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Happy New Year to all members.

As we embark upon another year, I can’t help but think how lucky we are to be Australian and in particular Australian racehorse owners.

The success of the Australian racehorse ownership model is, in my opinion, unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.

It has long been a misconception that racehorse ownership is only for the very wealthy.

Such may have been the case in years gone by, but nothing could be further from the truth now days.  The thrill of owning a racehorse is now readily available to all.

As we enter into the annual yearling sales, it is pleasing to see once again, new people entering into our industry.

The excitement and thrill of racehorse ownership is, as you all know, something that is very hard to match.

As you would have seen when membership renewals were sent out last month, membership fees to the Association are much lower this year.

We are able to make this exciting offer in 2013 thanks to the support of our ongoing partnership with Luxbet and supplementary funding from Racing NSW.

The Association is also hopefully that the decrease in fees will see an increase in our membership.  Fingers crossed that will be the case.

As the representative body for racehorse owners in this State and a major stakeholder in our wonderful industry, NSWROA needs the support of all owners to allow us fulfill our aim of making ownership cheaper and more enjoyable.

My fellow Committee Members join with me in wishing you all every success with your horses and look forward to seeing your names in our winners listing each month.

On behalf of our Members, NSWROA is grateful for the sponsorship and support of Luxbet.

MAGIC MILLIONS REPORT

NSWROA Committee member, Mr Louis Mihalyka, of Laurel Oak Bloodstock, made the trip to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Sale and has kindly prepared for the interest of members, the following item.

*   *   *   *   *

The 2013 yearling sale season is off and running with the completion of the traditional start, the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

There is always an air of anticipation about how the market will play, and this year was no different. On the pessimistic side, the feeling was that the world and Australian economies had not really picked up yet, but, despite that, there was some optimism because Northern Hemisphere sales over the past six months have shown improvements in most statistical benchmarks. It proved to be no different in the first Australian sale.

Demand was strong throughout the sale and it was very hard to buy the most sought-after horses. And that was reflected in the sale’s final statistics. Of the 645 lots in the Premier Sessions 1-4, there was a healthy 83% clearance rate, with the average increasing by 7.1% on last year to $136,132.

The median price, which is often considered a better reflection of the health of a sale, showed a slight 5% increase from $100,000 to $105,000.

The stars of the sale were Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice and Gai Waterhouse.

Gai appeared hell-bent on wresting the Sydney Trainers’ Premiership back from Chris Waller as she went on a buying spree, acquiring 26 yearlings for $5.8 million. She was, by some margin, the leading individual buyer and the second-biggest individual buyer was her syndicating offsider, Star Thoroughbreds, who bought twenty yearlings at a cost of $2.25 million, and they will all head to Gai. The top-priced lot of the sale was a Fastnet Rock colt from theLomar Park Stud draft, selling for $1.35 million to Coolmore Stud, and the reports are that he, too, will head to Gai’s stable, so that will be at least 47 new horses for her. Quite a remarkable number from one sale!

On the stallion front, Redoute’s Choice led the averages, with ten yearlings selling at an average of $384,508. John O’Shea bought the top-priced Redoute’s Choice for $800,000, which was the second-top lot of the sale.

While the averages have Redoute’s Choice on top, the runaway leader on aggregate was Australia’s current leading sire, Fastnet Rock. He had 33 sell at an average of $318,030. The quality of his offspring in the sale suggests that he will hold the fort as Australia’s leading sire for some seasons to come.

Medaglia D’Oro is a first-season sire for statistical purposes, although he came to Australia as an established US stallion. He led the first-season sire averages with six sold at an average of $156,666. Of the stallions whose first crops were on offer at a yearling sale, Wanted led the averages with eleven sold at an average of $149,772. His top-priced lot sold for $460,000, and that was a good gamble for the vendors, who pin-hooked him after purchasing him as a weanling last May for $255,000.

So with the 2013 yearling sale season off to a positive start, the road show moves on to the Inglis Classic Sale this coming weekend, 20-21 January, and that will be followed a week later by the Karaka Premier and Select Yearling Sales in New Zealand.

We will report in on those sales next month.

BOBS & BOBS EXTRA UPDATE

Queensland’s Magic Millions sale has kicked off what is to hopefully be a healthy and prosperous year for the NSW breeding industry.

Fantastic results were received from the sale with a number of lots fetching significant dollars. One beautifully bred BOBS-eligible colt from Lomar Park Stud, at the foothills of the Blue Mountains was sold for $1.35 million.

The colt – lot 251, by Fastnet Rock out of Smart Company was purchased by Coolmore Stud and will be trained by effervescent Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Sure to attract a multitude of attention, the colt may well ultimately be a star, however for now, the focus remains on his champion sire.

With the Inglis Classic Sale just around the corner, it might bode well to remind everyone of the basics of the BOBS and BOBS Extra schemes:

  • Current yearling are BOBS-eligible if they are sired by a NSW stallion paid up as a BOBS sire.
  • BOBS provides bonuses for horses winning in NSW in their two and three-year-old seasons, BOBS Extra bonuses are paid when the horse wins at 1800m or longer from the time it turns a 4YO.
  • BOBS and BOBS Extra nominations are made on the same form – at the same time – with a closing date of September 1, 2013. The fee for BOBS is $990 while the fee for BOBS Extra is an additional $840. You cannot enter a horse for BOBS Extra without having nominated it for BOBS.
  • If you miss the September 1 deadline, a two-year-old can still be nominated for a late fee of $5500 but there are no late nominations once a horse turns three.
  • Instead of taking BOBS bonus in cash, owners may opt to multiply the value by taking a Double-Up voucher which can then be used to purchase a BOBS-eligible yearling at any auction sale. The voucher is valid for two years.
