Following the recent Annual General Meeting of the Association, I was asked to mention to our members via the newsletter, some of the issues that I raised on the night.

During the past year the Association has provided input/submissions or lobbied on the following issues:

         *          the Personal Properties & Securities Act
         *          Distribution of Prizemoney
         *          Acceptance Fees on Black Type Racing
         *          Owners Ticketing Policy
         *          Raceday Cancellation Policy
         *          Minimum Penalties

Unfortunately one of our long-time issues, an Owners Card, remains dormant with Racing NSW.

The Association has also represented owners on various industry groups and bodies during the year including the Racing Industry Consultation Group (RICG), the Australian Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Council (ATROC), the Committee to Review Financial Arrangements between Owners and Trainers and the working party for the Personal Properties and Securities Act.  We also continue to conduct regular meetings with Racing NSW.

On the industry front, there were several important developments since the last AGM namely:-

  •     the continuation of the redevelopment of Royal Randwick;
  •     the granting of media rights in NSW to TVN;
  •     the introduction of Property Identification Codes; and
  •     prizemoney increases.

As mentioned previously the Association has representation on the Committee to Review Financial Arrangements between Owners and Trainers.  This Committee was formed by Racing NSW and NSWROA Committee Member Tom O’Callaghan is our delegate on same.  Our participation on this Committee is vital as it could have far reaching consequences for both Owners and the industry as a whole.

I would also like to stress the great importance for all racing participants to work together for the good of the industry.  Unfortunately, in my view, this is not occurring at present.  Times are tough and in order for our industry to go forward and indeed prosper, all participants must unite to ensure our common goal, ie. the success of our wonderful industry, is realised.

And in closing, may I also take this opportunity to remind members to contact us should you have an ownership issue you need assistance with. We have in recent times been contacted by several members with positive results.

Hereunder for the interest of members are some recent industry items:

Increases to Midweek and Public Holiday Minimum Prizemoney

Racing NSW has announced increases in midweek/Sunday prizemoney to $40,000 per race (from $35,000) and public holiday prizemoney to $50,000 per race (from $42,250). The changes represent a net increase in total NSW prizemoney of almost $1.5 million per annum.  These prizemoney increases accompany changes to the list of metropolitan and provincial racing schedule for 2013/14.

Metropolitan and Provincial Racing
Racing NSW have also announced that the metropolitan and provincial racing schedule has been restructured with ten metropolitan midweek meetings transferred to provincial race clubs and conducted as provincial meetings from July 2013.  The Australian Turf Club will conduct 113 race meetings, down from 123. The ten transferred meetings will be shared among Newcastle, Hawkesbury, and Kembla Grange.  Newcastle and Kembla Grange will each stage 34 meetings in 2013/14, with the Hawkesbury Race Club to stage 25 race meetings at Hawkesbury for 2013/14.

Australian Turf Club Spring Carnival
The Australian Turf Club has announced a revamped Spring Racing Carnival with the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes to be the highlight of its Royal Randwick meeting on Saturday 12 October 2013.  The ATC has also changed its spring sprinting series with the Concorde Stakes to be run over 1000m at Royal Randwick and The Shorts returning to 1100m leading in to the G2 Premiere Stakes 1200m on Epsom Super Saturday. Finally, race distances for two legs of the three-year-old fillies ‘Princess Series’ have been changed. The Furious Stakes is to be run over 1200m and the Tea Rose Stakes to be run over 1400m from 2013.  The restructure of the mares program will also provide a fortnightly series including the Sheraco Stakes 1200m, Golden Pendant 1400m and Angst Stakes 1600m.  The ATC will re-open the refurbished Kensington track at Royal Randwick on Sunday 29 September 2013. For the first time a Sunday meeting will be featured on free to air television, along with the Caulfield meeting on the same day.

Provincial Racing
In addition to the transfer of ten meetings to provincial racecourses, the dates for the Hawkesbury and Gosford Cups have been changed for the upcoming season.  The Hawkesbury Cup will be run for the first time in August moving from its previous date in November. The Cup meeting is scheduled for Thursday 22 August 2013.  The Gosford Race Club has moved their Cup meeting which also features the Takeover Target Stakes and Belle of the Turf Stakes from a Thursday, to Friday 10 January 2014. The meeting will be run as a twilight fixture.

Country Racing
The country racing schedule for 2013/14 is similar to previous seasons maintaining a full schedule of TAB meetings. In order to better meet demand for week day TAB racing, some matinee meetings during the Christmas/New Year period are being transferred to week days. This is expected to maximise the wagering appeal of these fixtures while maintaining racing opportunities for participants.

BOBS 2013 Now Open
BOBS 2013 is now up and running for horses turning 2YOs on 1 August 2013.  The Sires Scheme for 2016 is also now open.  For registration details either visit the Racing NSW website, email or telephone (02) 95517605.

The two-year-olds and three-year-olds were on display at Royal Randwick in June with a number of races restricted to juveniles and their peers.

Seven out of seven horses engaged in the two-year-old event were BOBS eligible and nine out of 13 were BOBS eligible in the three-year-old event.  And why wouldn’t they be. For those of you that have seen the Racing NSW website lately, you may have noticed the new BOBS television commercial. It’s gone to air on TVN and also through Telstra’s Racing Network and features a few familiar faces.

Chris Waller, Anthony Cummings and Bjorn Baker are all supporters of the scheme which Waller sums up nicely.  “Everyone likes money, everyone likes winning races. BOBS bonuses are the way to go,” he said.  And now the scheme is even more attractive, with the introduction of the BOBS Buyer Double-Up Promotion for BOBS Extra horses.

The objective of the BOBS Double-Up promotion is to encourage winning owners to reinvest in purchasing and racing BOBS eligible horses in NSW.  This is now open to include BOBS Extra winners which were foaled in 2011 effective from August 1, 2015.

So as we approach the September 1 deadline for BOBS nominations for horses about to turn two-years-old it’s well worth considering the additional $840 to enter BOBS Extra.

Be sure to ask yourself “is this horse going to run as a four-year-old or later and is it capable of winning over 1800m or longer?”.  If you answer in the affirmative, then don’t hesitate to pay the fee.
