FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Sydney is poised to enjoy the best Autumn Carnival ever when “The Championships” return in 2015. Thanks to the Gaming and Racing Minister and now Deputy Premier, The Hon. Troy Grant MP, the entire NSW thoroughbred industry will be included in The Championships.

Referred to as “Australia’s Grand Finals of Thoroughbred Racing”, The Championships have been enhanced in 2015 by the inclusion of the Country Championships and the Provincial Championships.

The Country Championships which carries a total of $1 million in prizemoney, comprises a 7 heat series (one in each region), with first and second qualifying for the 14 horse field in the Country Championships Final.  The final, run over 1400 metres at Royal Randwick on 4 April 2015 with $300,000 in prizemoney is on Day One of The Championships.

The Provincial Championships with $800,000 in prizemoney on offer, comprises 5 qualifying races in the respective provincial regions, with first, second and third qualifying for the Provincial Championships Final and fourth placegetters being emergencies for same.  The Provincial Championships Final over 1400 metres with $300,000 in prizemoney will be held on Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick on 11 April 2015.

The Championships series comprises 10 Grand Final races, including eight Group One events which are staged over two Saturdays and offer in excess of $20 million in prizemoney.  Races include the $3 million TJ Smith Stakes (Day 1), the $3 million Doncaster Mile (Day 1) and the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Day 2), the world's richest 2000m turf race.

I, for one, cannot wait for the Autumn to arrive but haven’t we seen some wonderful Spring racing during both the Sydney and Victorian Carnivals?  Our congratulations to those of our members who recorded wins during the period.

Whilst all wins are good wins, we all covet a Group 1 win and it would be remiss of me not to make mention of NSWROA members who have achieved “the ultimate goal” during the Spring Carnivals.  They are (in alphabetical order) F & Mrs C Cook (Foreteller (GB) – MRC Underwood Stakes and Preferment (NZ) – VRC Derby), N Couper (Terravista – VRC Darley Classic), D & Mrs M Frew (Brazen Beau – VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes), Gooree Stud (Hallowed Crown - ATC Golden Rose Stakes), Mrs D & P Kepitis (Amicus – MRC Thousand Guineas), J & Mrs P Muir (Hampton Court – ATC Spring Champion Stakes), Dato Tan Chin Nam (First Seal – ATC Flight Stakes), R Pegum (He’s Your Man (FR) – ATC Epsom Handicap and Junoob (GB) – ATC Metropolitan) and D Ramage (First Seal – ATC Flight Stakes).

MAGIC MILLIONS SALES OPTIONAL POST-SALE BLOOD TESTING

The Association has been advised by Magic Millions Sales Pty Limited that, in accordance with the Australian Racing Board’s introduction of new Rules banning the use of anabolic steroids in thoroughbred racehorses, Magic Millions will be offering purchasers of racing stock (ie horses not being sold as breeding stock), the option of requesting a post-sale blood test to be screened for the presence of anabolic steroids.

The optional post-sale blood testing will form a condition of sale.  Should the blood sample be reported as having an anabolic androgenic steroid detected (as defined as prohibited under the Australian Rules of Racing), the sale of the horse will automatically be cancelled and the horse returned to the vendor at their cost.

Click here to view an extract from the Magic Millions Conditions of Sale concerning the testing for anabolic steroids.

This optional blood testing will commence from the first Magic Millions sale in 2015, the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to be conducted 7-13 January.

BOBS & BOBS EXTRA UPDATE

Update by Mark Brassel, Racing NSW Media & Website Manager

Mine Two – racing in the famous white, purple star and hooped sleeves of the White family – had no Furnaces to contend with when she scored an easy win at Royal Randwick last month.  The daughter of I Am Invincible, a stallion producing winner after winner, had run into a pretty handy galloper in the Darley-owned Furnaces at her Rosehill Gardens debut.  Furnaces, also a BOBS performer, oozed quality as he defeated Mine Two by a widening six lengths so her subsequent win franked the ability of Furnaces.

Apprentice Claire Nutman rode a copybook race on Mine Two, parking the filly in third place behind the leaders Carriages and Domanus.  Nutman then peeled around the pair and dashed away to set up a winning break.  Favourite Italy, also a Darley horse, ran home strongly for second but was no match for Nutman and Mine Two.

Four races later saw evergreen jockey Jim Cassidy drive Amovatio* to a narrow victory and snare a $20,000 BOBS Extra bonus for connections.  Cassidy was awkwardly placed back last on the fence coming to the bend and seemed to take an eternity to gain clear running down the straight.  But the four-year-old sprinted powerfully once clear and nabbed Mr One Eleven and another BOBS Extra horse, Timeless Prince, right on the wining post.

Owners of Amovatio have found BOBS quite lucrative with the gelding now having won $70,000 in bonuses through both BOBS and BOBS Extra incentive schemes.

It’s no surprise I Am Invincible (standing at Yarraman Park) leads the way on the BOBS Sires List with 12 bonus wins for $85,000 in BOBS cash.  Arrowfield Stud’s Not a Single is a close second with 11 wins for $80,000 followed by Charge Forward, Lonhro, Snitzel and Stratum all on $55,000.

*Footnote:  Amovatio is part-owned by NSWROA member Mr Michael Larmer

NEXT TAB SADDLE-UP SUNDAY MEETING 23 NOVEMBER 2014 GOULBURN & DISTRICT RACING CLUB

The next TAB Saddle-up Sunday Meeting will be conducted by the Goulburn & District Racing Club on Sunday, 23 November 2014 – Goulburn Cup Day.

The historic Goulburn Cup, which dates back to 1883, is an outstanding meeting on the NSW country racing calendar, showcasing the best horses from the Southern District, as well as contenders from leading metropolitan stables, all competing for more than $235,000 in prizemoney.

Once again, the Goulburn Cup (1600m) will headline a fantastic day of racing, offering $100,000 to starters, followed by the renamed $30,000 Emirates Park Guy Walter Handicap (1300m) on a full eight-race card.

Goulburn is 195 km south of Sydney which equates to just two hours in a car. Take a scenic drive through the beautiful Southern Highlands and stop off at picturesque towns such as Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale. Alternatively, a drive down the coastal roads and then through the glorious Kangaroo Valley will add value to a great weekend of racing.

Visit the website – www.gocountryracing.com.au – for further information on the race meeting, accommodation and local activities to make a perfect weekend away.
