FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

In my column last month I advised of the creation of The Country Championships, a 7 heat series in various country regions, which culminates with a Country Championships Final, with $300,000 in prizemoney on offer, being held during The Championships at Royal Randwick on 4 April 2015.

Unfortunately in the country series originally announced, horses trained in Canberra who are predominantly owned by NSW residents, were not eligible to compete. The Association, on behalf of our members and indeed all country owners, made representations to Gaming and Racing Minister, the Hon Troy Grant MP on this issue.  I am very pleased to advise our representations were successful.

Canberra trained horses can now compete in the Goulburn qualifying race of the country series on 20 March 2015 with some $100,000 on offer.

Since then the Minister has also announced that there will also be a Provincial Championships Final with $300,000 in prizemoney on offer, being held during The Championships at Royal Randwick on 11 April 2015.  Each of the five provincial race clubs will conduct a qualifying race worth $100,000 in prizemoney.

NSWROA applauds the Minister for his initiative to include the entire NSW thoroughbred industry in The Championships.

The Association was delighted to once again support the National Jockeys Trust by taking a table at their annual function which was conducted at Royal Randwick on 6 September 2014.  An item regarding this function appears later in the newsletter.

At the time of writing, the first day of the ATC Spring Carnival has just been conducted.  I urge all members to attend the Carnival which runs until 18 October 2014 and includes numerous time honoured races.

Spring in Sydney is just fantastic – see you at the races!

THE NATIONAL JOCKEYS TRUST ANNUAL RACEDAY

The National Jockeys Trust (NJT) held their annual raceday luncheon at Royal Randwick on Saturday 6th September 2014 and NSWROA were proud to support the function by taking a table at the event.

I am pleased to advise that the day was a great success raising much needed funds and awareness for seriously ill and injured jockeys and their families.

A highlight on the day was the unveiling of a magnificent bronze statue to the fallen which takes pride of place next to the McGrath Meeting Tree.  The statue, which is based on famed jockey Hughie Cairns who died at Moonee Valley in 1929, was unveiled by Wayne Harris.

Noted around the statue are the names of the 870 jockeys who have passed away.

To date the Trust has assisted more than 190 jockeys and their families with more than $2 million in financial support.

For further information or to make a donation visit the National Jockeys Trust website www.njt.org.au

RACING THROUGH TIME

In it there will be articles about the ATC collection, our volunteers and the projects we are working on, and some of the experiences we encounter during the process. It will contain images – coloured and black & white – of some of the treasures that are in the ATC collection.

To receive the newsletter simply send an email to heritage@australianturfclub.com.au and ask to be put on the distribution list, and provide your email address.  We will do the rest and we think you will be pleased you did.

LIFE ON THE RACING ROLLER COASTER – BOOK GIVEAWAY

As we all only know too well, life in the racing industry can, at times, seem like a ride on a roller coaster.  How can we reach such highs only to fall seemingly, just as quickly?

NSWROA member, Antony Surace decided to chronicle his time to date as a racehorse owner in his recently released book “Life on the Racing Roller Coaster”.  The book is, to quote Antony’s words “the memoirs of an Owner of (Mostly) Average Racehorses”.

Firstly, I declare my interest as one of the proof-readers for this book which is such a great easy read and thank Antony most sincerely for his acknowledgement of my small contribution.  Like me, I am sure that in no time at all, Antony’s narrative will have you spellbound as we follow the career of the wonderful “Sparky” aka Brilliant Light and his “stablemates” in this industry that we all love so well.

The book (in hard copy) is available for purchase from the Bookpal online bookstore at www.bookpal.com.au or an electronic version can be purchased from the iBooks store (for iPad) or on Amazon (for Kindle).

Antony has very kindly donated two copies of the book to giveaway to NSWROA members.

To enter simply answer the following question:

In which race did Brilliant Light record his first black type win?

Then send answer together with your name and address to either nswroa1@ozemail.com.au or to GPO Box 1506 SYDNEY   NSW   2001.

Entries close on 30 September 2014 and the winners will be listed in the October issue of the NSWROA Times newsletter.

Good luck with your entry!

Candidates sought for Australian Turf Club Board
The NSW Government is seeking expressions of interests from candidates for the three independent director positions on the board of the Australian Turf Club (ATC) which expire on 31 January 2015.  Expressions of interest are open until Sunday 5 October 2014 to fill the three positions.  A selection panel will be formed and assisted by a probity advisor to recommend the best candidates based on merit and in accordance with the eligibility and skills-based criteria prescribed in the Australian Jockey and Sydney Turf Clubs Merger Act 2010.  Candidates are required to have experience in a senior administrative role or experience at a senior level in business, finance, law, marketing, technology, commerce, regulatory administration or regulatory enforcement.

Australian Crime Commission and Racing NSW to share information under a Memorandum of Understanding
The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) and Racing NSW have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to allow the sharing of information which will further assist in protecting the industry against potential criminal exploitation.  ACC Chief Executive Mr Chris Dawson said it was an excellent opportunity for law enforcement and the racing industry to expand their relationship and do everything they can to ensure the sport is protected from infiltration by serious and organised crime.  Racing NSW Chief Executive Mr Peter V’Landys said the agreement will further increase public confidence in the industry.

BOBS & BOBS EXTRA UPDATE

Update by Mark Brassel, Racing NSW Media & Website Manager

Racing NSW has extended its nomination deadline date for the Breeders Owners Bonus Scheme (BOBS) to include the upcoming Magic Millions 2YO’s in Training/Patinack Farm A Complete Dispersal Sale which will be held on Tuesday, 30 September 2014.

The extension will also include the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale at Newmarket on Tuesday, 7 October 2014.

Prospective owners will now have the chance to nominate any BOBS eligible horse purchased at these sales for BOBS and BOBS Extra – without paying the late fee – despite nominations for BOBS closing on 1 September 2014.

As the trend of international buyers attending ready to run sales in Australasia increases, so too has the popularity of the sales within the domestic market.

Now in its 12th year, BOBS and BOBS Extra are immensely popular bonus schemes. Last season 1333 BOBS wins were recorded paying a record $8.6 million, while 211 BOBS Extra bonuses were won totaling $1.26 million.

The closing date for BOBS registration for purchases at either of these sales is Monday, 20 October 2014.

To nominate your horse, visit the BOBS information page at www.racingnsw.com.au and download a nomination form or complete an online form.

Meanwhile, the Gary Portelli-trained Mendelssohn landed both a $5000 BOBS bonus and executed a plunge when he scored on Newcastle’s Cameron Handicap Day.  The son of Oratorio (Ire) was backed in from $11 to $6.50 and cruised up to the leaders at 250m and put pay to them quickly.

The Portelli stable also had success with Stratical who won a $5000 BOBS bonus at Newcastle on September 6.

FREE BOBS Sire Guide

Don’t forget Racing NSW’s latest BOBS Sire Guide (2017) is available from Racing NSW FREE of charge.  The Sire Guide is for BOBS 2017 – those stallions covering mares in 2014 whose progeny will turn two-year-olds in 2017.

The new Sire Guide is invaluable for mare owners planning this season’s coverings and is available by contacting Racing NSW via email - bobs@racingnsw.com.au - or by telephone (02) 9551 7605.
