FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

It was with great pride and pleasure that I addressed members at the 50th Annual General Meeting of the Association on 18 May 2015.

What a great milestone for NSWROA!  Throughout the year I look forward to welcoming members to various events we will be holding to commemorate and celebrate this wonderful achievement.

May I take this opportunity to thank both current and former Directors who have so generously given their time to the Association.  All have worked hard to “build” the Association from the ground up and we are indebted to them.

Mr John Vouris, our former Vice President and Treasurer, was awarded Life Membership at the meeting.  Former President, Mr Max Whitby, a Life Member himself, spoke in support of the Life Membership motion which was unanimously passed.

From an owners’ perspective, no bigger issue has affected us in recent times than the proposed Payment Mandate.  As you are aware despite being raised by the Association non-stop at RICG and our continuous objections, a Payment Mandate on Owners is scheduled to take effect from 1 August 2015.  Be assured that the Association will continue to fight non-stop on your behalf on this issue.

Some other issues the Association provided input/submissions or lobbied on during the year included:-

*          New Track Rating System
*          Jockey’s Superannuation
*          NSW Racing Industry Size and Scope Study
*          Country Championships – extension of eligibility criteria
*          Racing NSW Strategy Plan
*          Benchmarking and Handicapping
*          Flunctuation Screens at Randwick; and
*          Hospitality of Syndicates at metropolitan meetings.

I am also proud to advise Members that Racing NSW will be returning as a Sponsor at Racing’s Night of Champions this year.  Once again the industry will be united in “Celebrating the Best” in our wonderful industry when we return to the home of racing, Royal Randwick, for our flagship event on 20 August 2015.

On behalf of our Members, NSWROA is grateful for the sponsorship and support of Tabcorp.

Hereunder is a reminder to members about “Equi-Cover Farm” a specific farm insurance product available from our good friend and corporate partner Gow-Gates Insurance Brokers.

* * * * * *

Horse insurance has been a core Gow-Gates service for over forty years and we are continually looking to develop unique insurance offerings for Australian horse owners and breeders.

In response to our clients’ need for a product to better manage the risks associated with operating an equine farm business, Gow-Gates has developed a specific farm insurance product in conjunction with Alliance Australia Insurance Limited and Lloyd’s: “Equi-Cover Farm”.

In addition to the insurance of farm assets such as houses, stables, sheds, fencing, machinery, horse trucks and floats, etc, key features include cover for:-

  • Up to $15,000 provided for temporary accommodation of horses as a result of damage to stables by a defined event
  • Accidental damage to, or theft of, saddlery and tack from a locked building or vehicle either at the farm of when temporarily away from your farm
  • Up to $2,500 per horse for the cost of destroying and disposing of a horse if the horse dies as a result of a defined event
  • Up to $1,000 for the cost to transport horses if the vehicle cannot be driven as a result of a defined event during a land transit

The Equi-Cover Farm package also provides Public Liability cover in respect of agistment/spelling and breeding/stud activities, including Care, Custody and Control liability for claims relating to injury or death of horses in your care, as well as general farm liability.

VALE – MRS MARGARET INGLIS

The NSW Racehorse Owners Association was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Margaret Inglis on 4 June 2015.

Mrs Inglis was the beloved wife of the late John Inglis and dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Bill (dec.), Jan and Greg, Arthur and Charlotte and proud grandmother to their children.

The thoroughbred industry has lost one of its finest and on behalf of the NSWROA Committee and our members, we extend our deepest sympathy to the Inglis Family.

INDUSTRY UPDATES

Hereunder for the interest of members are some recent industry items:

Priceless Sydney Racing History Goes on Free Public Display
The Australian Turf Club has announced that it will put on a free public display over the next three months of priceless Sydney racing history and memorabilia.  Comprising racing trophies, photographs, artwork and publications from more than 150 years of Sydney racing history, the display will be featured at Randwick City Council’s Bowen Library, 669-673 Anzac Parade at Maroubra.  The material dates back to the formation of the Australian Jockey Club and race meetings dating back to the 1850s, through to the establishment of the Sydney Turf Club in 1943 and the historic merger of the two race clubs in February 2011 until today.  The display will run from June to September 2015 with library opening times of Monday-Friday 10am to 9pm, Saturday 9.30am-4pm and Sunday 12noon to 4pm.

Inglis Positions for the Next 100 years
Inglis have announced that they will be relocating their head office and auction facilities from Newmarket to Warwick Farm to position itself for the long term.  In 2009 Inglis acquired 26 acres of land adjoining Warwick Farm Racecourse from the Australian Turf Club as an option for the future and after recently achieving rezoning of the Newmarket site, will now proceed with relocation plans.  It is anticipated that the move will occur in three years during the spring of 2018 with the first major yearling sales at the new facility to be conducted in early 2019.  For further details visit http://inglis.com.au/news/item/inglis-positions-for-the-next-100-years

BOBS & BOBS EXTRA UPDATE

Update by Matt Jones, Racing NSW Media & Communications Executive

Two new leaders have emerged on the BOBS Bonus leaderboard after Loved Up and Tree Of Jesse had a pair of good wins in the past month.

Both scored $20,000 in BOBS Bonuses to be equal leaders for the season with $50,000 each.

Loved Up entered the Inglis 3YO Guineas at Scone on the back of a good campaign with wins in The Championships Country Series qualifier at Wagga Wagga and the Albury Guineas.  She then ran sixth in The Championships Country Series Final on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick before flying home late to almost win the Town Plate at Wagga Wagga.

Heading into the Scone meeting she was ready to run another good race, but it also took a top ride from Richard Bensley to get her over the line in first place.  Bensley had Loved Up at the rear of the field approaching the home turn and elected to be patient and wait for a rails run.  When the opportunity arose he drove the filly up the inside to beat her rivals by 1½ lengths and secure $20,000 in BOBS Bonuses.

Meanwhile, Tree Of Jesse – also a filly – joined Loved Up at the top of the leaderboard thanks to a great win in the wet at Royal Randwick.

The three-year-old, by Street Cry, was given a gun ride by jockey Tim Clark, which would have pleased trainers Bart and James Cummings.  Tree Of Jesse took her career earnings to $193,425 with $50,000 of that coming in the way of BOBS Bonuses.  She has won three from six with one minor placing and looks to have a bright future.

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS

A WINNER – there are no better words for an owner to hear!  As members are aware, as part of our membership renewal process, NSWROA requested members to forward the names of their racehorses in order for us to acknowledge their racing triumphs in our publications.

The listing under comprises wins recorded in New South Wales as well as Australian black type successes which are recorded in bold type.

Accordingly, hereunder are the lucky NSWROA members who had winners in May 2015
